The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria has promised to sanction errant members in the face of the economic challenges confronting the nation.
The President, ANAN, Mr. Anthony Nzom, gave this hint during the association’s 3rd session of the 2016 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development programme held in Calabar.
The session had as its theme: ‘Challenges and Landmark Issues in Accounting Profession’.
Nzom said the meeting was organized to improve the skills of members to face the challenges posed by changing trends in the profession.
He stated that it would also afford members the opportunity to benchmark with their professional colleagues.
The ANAN president said, “The association expects all members to be its worthy ambassadors by exhibiting ethical conduct in the discharge of their professional callings.
“We will continue to ensure that our members toe the path of honesty and integrity, and will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law where members are found wanting.”
He added that the deregulation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by the Federal Government would drive the nation’s economy for optimal benefits.
Nzom said that the deregulation would give room for private participation in the petroleum sector and competition among major and independent oil marketers.
He stated, “We commend the Federal Government for its initiative in deregulating the downstream sector of the petroleum industry. As a nation, we must fully appreciate the expediency of government’s stance on deregulation as it will reduce the pressure on the naira and the foreign reserves. It will also attract the urgently needed private sector investment among other numerous benefits.
“The Federal Government’s efforts in revamping the Nigeria oil sector is a positive indicator for the economy as demonstrated in the revitalization of some refineries in the country for the production of oil.”
Earlier, the Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, said that the association had lived up to expectations in the training of its members for better accounting reporting and auditing.
Ayade, who was represented by the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Asuquo Ekpeyong, said that the association had shaped the accounting profession in Nigeria.
