The Executive Chairman of Edo State Internal Revenue Service Chief (Sir ) Oseni Elamah said if the present political/economic challenges is anything to go by, overdependence on iol revenue will no longer be sufficient to drive home the much desired development  in the country.

 

To this end, the EIRS boss pressed for the need for a shift towards taxation as a reliable source of revenue generation that would help in meeting the yearnings of the people.

 

Chief Elamah was speaking when he received the executive members of the Edo State Tax Juctice and Governance Platform in Benin City.

 

Chief Elamah who was represented by an Executive Director of EIRS, Hon. (Barr) John Obazee, noted that the people are beginning to feel the fruit of the State Governor, Comrade Adams Aliu Oshiomhole’s vision on the need to develop a sustainable base for development, through the entrenchment of a fair, just and equitable system of tax administration aimed at ensuring a reliable source of revenue generation of government.

 

He maintained that in the present situation where other states are unable to pay workers salaries, Edo State is paying as at when due.

 

The State Coordinator of the State Tax Justice and Governance Platform Sam Ajufoh had said that following the present dwindling revenue as a result of the fall in oil prices, the body was confident that more persons especially in the informal sector would be willing to pay their taxes.

 

He commended the Chief Elamah’s Initiative and effort towards a transparent system of tax administration for the purpose of eliminating multiple taxation, as well as promoting tax justice in the state.

 

“In the the actualization of the dream  of getting as many as possible to pay taxes, we need to ensure that people, both rich and poor pay their correct taxes,” Ajufoh stated.
