The Edo State Governor, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki has cautioned newly elected local government council chairmen to refrain from engaging thugs for the purpose of revenue generation.
Governor Obaseki handed down the warning to the council chief executives during the opening ceremony of a three-day onboarding programme organized for newly elected LG Chairmen and Councillors by Edo State Government in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
Obaseki warned that “thugery will not be accepted as a means for revenue generation in the State. “We do not accept that people should be harassed before they pay revenue. Our people are law abiding and as long as you approach them respectfully, they will pay their tax.”
Assuring the LG bosses of the State Government’s support, Obaseki urged the elected Council Officials to take the issues of revenue generation, security as well as job creation as priority projects.
He said the new revenue model, successfully evolved and adopted to enhance revenue base, would assist the Local Government Chairmen in boosting their council area revenue.
