Edo State Government has again expressed worry over the prevalent multiple collections of revenue/levies in the state.

 

The assertion was made during a stakeholders meeting between the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) and the various union leaders and other trade unions in the state.

 

In his opening remarks, the Executive Chairman of EIRS Chief (Sir) Oseni Elamah expressed the state government’s worry over the issue of ticketing in the state, describing it as illegal extortion/ ticketing.

 

 

Recalled that the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in his inaugural address vowed to rid the state of multiple ticketing, chief Elamah maintained that the present administration would not relent in its oar in ensuring the protection of its citizens on the premise of peace and unity anchored on transparency, accountability and honesty.

 

He pressed further that the move for the enthronement of positive change as demonstrated by Governor Oshiomhole should be strengthened and deepened, saying it would further the step towards ensuring full enforcement of the vow of the governor during his inaugural address.

 

The EIRS boss said that in view of ensuring peace and harmony in the revenue collection system in the state, the EIRS had earlier held a meeting with Local Government councils.

He further reiterated government’s position on the collection of road taxes/levies, maintaining that no individuals or groups were allowed to do so.

 

He stated that such taxes regarding vehicle/drivers licenses are issued and collected via motor/vehicle licencing offices across the state.

He used the forum to reiterate the ban on sales of emblems by individuals/groups under any guise, he pointed out that unions were at the liberty to protect their members instead of allowing them to be subjected to over levy.

 

On her part the Chairman of Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Hon. Lucy Omagbon, said the council was operating in line with the stipulated bye-laws.

 

Taking exception to Akugbe Ventures, the council chairman said the challenge of the tax system centered on such union constituting nuisance in the name of collecting revenues on the high ways.

Some of the union leaders in their remarks frowned at the multiple illegal collections, but maintained that they operate within the ambit of the law.

 

Chairman of Akugbe Ventures, Mr. Tony Kabaka  Adun who acknowledged the Chief Elamah’s initiative for such meeting, said his organization only collect what is due it according to state government’s order.

 

He cited the inability of his organization to ascertain the data base of drivers as a major challenge to Akugbe Ventures.
