The Edo State Police Command and the Edo State Internal Revenue Service are in for a partnership move in view of cleaning the revenue system of illegal extortions/ ticketing, especially on the roads through aggressive enforcement.
Both parties gave this indication when the Executive Management team of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) led by the Executive Chairman paid a courtesy visit to the new state Commissioner of Police in Benin City.
Addressing the Commissioner, Chief Elamah said the visit was to seek collaboration/partnership with the command towards checkmating the excesses of some individuals/groups extorting unsuspecting members of the public in the name of revenue on the roads.
According to him, “nobody is allowed to collect money from motorist on the road, “adding that the tax law frowns at it.
He noted that taxes due to the government are not collected on the high ways, while maintaining that road taxes are collected via the motor licencing offices across the state.
The EIRS boss described revenue officials as vulnerable persons in the society who could hardly carry out their duties successfully without the cooperation of security agencies.
He acknowledged the existing cordial relationship between the EIRS and the Police Command over time which he said contributed to the developmental ‘tsunami’ currently witnessed across the nook and crannies of Edo State.
In his remarks, the Commissioner of Police described the visit as a further demonstration of the existing relationship between him and Chief Elamah.
While asserting that the police actions were for the betterment of the society, the commissioner assured that he would synergize and work with the EIRS in line with the already existed relationship.
